Sault sweeps indoors at LSSU

The Sault High track teams each earned wins in the Newberry/Manistique LSSU Invitational at Lake Superior State University on Friday.
The Sault boys finished first with 95 points, almost 30 ahead of second-place Munising, while the Blue Devils' girls squeaked past St. Ignace 99-90.
Three area teams competed in the meet, while Manistique and Munising rounded out the five-team field along with St. Ignace, Newberry and the Sault.
Sarah Duesing helped the Blue Devils' cause by winning the high jump (5-5), and the 55 hurdles (8.90). It also helped that the Sault swept the first three places in the high jump as well as the 1600-meter run. Natalie Cahill took first in the 1600 (5:36.61). The Sault also got wins in the 1600-meter relay (4:25.23), and the 3200-relay (10:45.61).
Katie Guimond took a second for the Sault in the high jump, while Kaycee Lawrence earned a second in the 1600-meter run. Bridget Dougherty also took a second in the 3200-meter run.
For St. Ignace, the Saints stayed in the hunt by finishing 1-2 in four different events. Eryn Mercer helped keep the Saints close with wins in the 55-meter dash (7.30), and the 200-meters (28.25). Karolyn Getzen won the 400-meters (1:03.47) and Micaela Kelso won the shotput (33-1.5). The Saints also took a first in the 800-meter relay (1:53.66).
Adria West finished second in the 55 hurdles and the 800 run, while Getzen took a second in the 55-meter dash. Marielle Calcaterra earned a second in the 400-meter dash, and Meghann Savard took second in the shot put. Kate Ruegg also got a second in the 200 dash.
For Newberry, Amanda Quick was the only runner to place in the top two spots in an event. She won the 800-meter run (2:44.59).
For the boys, Steve Ojala, Jereld Sawyer and Cliff Lindsey all took firsts in helping the Blue Devils to the overall team win.
Ojala won the 55-meter hurdles (8.05), while Lindsey won the 800-meter run (2:03.5), and Sawyer had the longest heave of the shot put (49-2).
The Sault also took a first in the 3200-meter relay (8:48.30).
The Blue Devils got second place finishes from Nate Martin in the 55-meter dash, as well as Dan Brown in the 800-meter dash.
For Newberry, James Miller took the only individual first place finish. He won the 55-meter dash (6.58). The Indians also won the 800-meter relay as well as the 1600-meter relay.
The Indians got second-place finishes from Brandon Stamper in the 55m-hurdles and the high jump, as well as Miller in the 200-meter dash.
