ESCANABA - The Sault High boys and girls track teams both came up one point short at a heavyweight Class A-B regional meet Thursday at Escanaba High School.

The Marquette boys won with 51 points while the Blue Devils followed with 50. Marquette was third with 33.5.

The top four individual finishers and top two relays qualified for the U.P. finals, which will be held in Kingsford next Saturday.

Cliff Lindsey set the pace for the Blue Devils by winning the 1600 (4:30.78) and 800 (2:02.29), and taking second in the 3200 (10:23.30). Jereld Sawyer (152-0) and Chris Wakeman finished 1-2 in the discus and Jeremy Myers was fourth. Jim Shannon won the 300 hurles (42.31). The Blue Devils' team of Dan Brown, Shannon, John Anderson and Nate Martin won the 1600 relay (3:36.08) and Brown, Anderson, Craig Cooper and Tony Abramson won the 3200 (8:38).

The Blue Devils finished with 11 qualifiers for U.P. Finals but lost some key points along the way. The Sault dropped the baton and did not qualify in the 400 and 800 relays, and some expected qualifiers scratched on all three attempts in their respective events.

Among the other Sault highlights, John Anderson qualified in four events by also making the cut with fourth-place showings in the 400 and 800 runs. Abramson also qualified with fourth-place results in the 1600 and 3200. Neal McLeod took third in the 200, Brown was third in the 800 and Josh Anderson took third in the 400. Wakeman also took second in the shot put while Myers was fourth.

"We had some disappointments and at the same time still had some great finishes," Sault coach Jim Martin said. "We have our work cut out for us at U.P. Finals. Calumet and Esky are the teams to beat now but we should be right there too, and we can still win (Finals)."

In the girls meet, the Sault also finished one point out of first place. Marquette won with 51 points, the Blue Devils followed with 50 and Gladstone was third with 28.

Sarah Duesing won four events for the Blue Devils and Natalie Cahill posted a first and two second-place finishes.

Duesing won the 100 hurldes (15.60), 300 hurdles (48.29), long jump (15-8.25) and high jump (5-4). The Blue Devils also won the 1600 relay (4:19.17).

Cahill broke her own school record in the 3200, winning in a time of 11:31.95. She was also second behind Menominee's Mandy Long in the 1600 and 800. Kristen Press was third in both hurdle events, Jen Crawford was fourth in the 400, Katie Guimond was third in the discus and Tara Dougherty fourth.

The Blue Devils were scheduled to run in the Big North Conference meet today at Traverse City West.
