Rudyard runs to SAC win
NEWBERRY -- The Rudyard boys cross country team captured a Straits Area Conference Jamboree No. 3 Tuesday.
Brent Malaski of Rudyard toured the 5-K course at the Canada Lakes trails in 16 minutes and 30 seconds to win the boys' race. Sam Otten of Rudyard was 8th in 17:39, Jason Gregg was 9th in 17:46, Chad Folkersma 10th in 17:47, Justin Hoolsema 11th in 17:50 and Josh Bywater 12th in 17:51.
The Bulldogs won with 39 team points. Rogers City was second with 59, followed by Newberry 77, St. Ignace 95, Onaway 141 and Inland Lakes 168.
Will Springsteen of St. Igance finished second in 16:30 while teammate Luke Fowler was 6th in 17:29. Also for the Saints, Pat Springsteen was 25th in 19:51, Tim Mullen was 30th in 20:07 and Joey Weiss was 32nd in 20:17.
Chad Brunet took 7th for Newberry in 17:38. Adam Brown placed 16th in 18:27, Steve Swanson was 17th in 18:42, Nick Engman was 18th in 18:54, and Kyle Stewart was 19th in 19:02.
Rogers City won the girls meet with 35 points. Newberry was second with 40 and Rudyard was third with 81. They were followed by St. Ignace 123, Inland Lakes 130 and Onaway 138.
Stephanie Folkersma of Rudyard was the top local finisher, placing second in 19:47. Also for the Bulldogs, Shayla Postma took 5th in 20:22, Marie Ghastin was 20th in 22:08, Mary Couling was 24th in 23:06 and Beth English 30th in 25:03.
Newberry runners took sixth-through-11th place. Kerri Bush was 6th in 20:31, Laura Siuda was 7th in 20:43, Kyle Richards 8th in 20:44, Jill Robinson 9th in 20:45, Tiffany Thorp 10th in 20:50 and Amanda Quick 11th in 20:52.
Lisa Wheeler led St. Ignace, placing 13th in 21:10. Erin Evashevski was 18th in 21:55, Alicia Elliott 19th in 21:57.
