Area runners collect All-U.P. honors
SAULT STE. MARIE -- The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devil boys cross country team earned Upper Peninsula Team of the Year honors as they notched their third straight U.P. title at the finals last week in Gladstone.
The Blue Devil boys scored 29 points in the finals, six points ahead of runner-up Marquette.
Dan Brown of the Sault finished third overall at the finals and was rewarded by being named to the All-Class Dream Team.
The Blue Devil boys also placed several runners on the first team in Division I. Tony Abramson, Adam Gurnoe, Graig Cooper and Pete Duesing were named to the team after all finished in the top 10 at the finals.
Brent Malaski of Rudyard was named first team in Division 2 after winning the D-2 title at the finals.
Malaski with a one-second victory over Ryan Kruger of Ishpeming. Kruger had topped Malaski in three previous meets over the course of the season.
Will Springsteen of St. Ignace was also named to the Division II first team after a strong showing in the finals. He was the only Saints' runner for both the boys or girls to be named to the team.
In Division III for the boys, Pickford Panthers Brad Hunter and Tony King were awarded first-team honors.
Cross country coaches make their All-U.P. picks based primarily on finishing positions in the finals.
For the girls, Natalie Cahill of the Sault was named to the All-U.P Dream Team. She was edged out for U.P. Runner of the Year honors however by Westwood's Amber Smith. Smith won the Division 2 race, finishing 30 seconds better than Cahill did in the Division 1 competition.
Kayce Lawrence and Jennifer Corbiere were also named to the team for the Blue Devils in Division I.
In Division 2, Stephanie Folkersma of Rudyard posted a third-place finish at the finals to earn an All-U.P. award, as did fellow Bulldog Shayla Postma, who finished 13th in the finals.
Rosanna Chapman and Courtnie Brown of Pickford also earned All-U.P. honors.
The Sault will hold its cross country banquet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Elks Club.
