Sault boys win Rotary Early Bird track meet

SAULT STE. MARIE -- The Sault High boys track team got off on the right foot on Thursday as they dominated an indoor track meet hosted by Lake Superior State University.

The boys had 89 points in taking the Large School Title, while Stephenson claimed the Small School Title with 65.

The Sault boys earned the majority of their points in the relays.

Steve Ojala, Mike Kennedy, Steve Hank and Nate Young won the 4x50 shuttle relay (34.18), while Eric Mason, Neal McLeod, Ojala, and Matt Labron won the 4x200 (1:40.10), Craig Cooper, Kennedy, Adam Gurnoe, and Dan Brown teamed to win the distance medley (11:53.02).

Sault relay teams also took seconds in the 4x800, as well as the 1,000-meter sprint relay. The Sault also took a third in the 4x400.

Individually, Nate Martin placed second in the 55-meter dash, while Tony Abramson took a second in the mile run. Abramson also took a third in the high-jump. Jereld Sawyer took a third in the shot-put as well.

The Sault girls placed second in the Large School Division with 84 points, second to Cheboygan's 88. Newberry won the Small School Division with 52 points.

The Sault girls were also strong in the relays as they won the 4x200 relay (2:04.34), and the 4x800 (11:07.85). The Sault relay teams also took a second in the 4x400 relay.

Individually, Natalie Cahill won the mile run (5:35.07), while Michelle Lynn took a second in the 60-meter dash, and Tara Dougherty took third in the shot-put.
