Emeralds lead field at Kiwanis Invitational

ST. IGNACE -- The Newberry Indians won only one event at the St. Ignace Kiwanis Invitational track meet on Saturday. Yet they earned enough second, third, and fourth place finishes to earn 101.5 points secure a second place overall finish against the seven-team field.

Manistique won the meet with a score of 150.5, while St. Ignace was third with 97. Rogers City placed fourth with 57, and Rudyard was next with 50. Inland Lakes finished sixth with 45, and Engadine was seventh with 22.

"This is a good local meet," said Newberry coach John Carlson. "The sun is out and it's not snowing so it's a good day to run."

Brent Malaski of Rudyard was the only multiple-event winner among local athletes. He won the 1600 (4:47), as well as the 3200 (10:27). Nathan Templeton continued his dominance on the short track by winning the 100-meter dash (10.96).

Newberry got its only win of the meet from Jim Bourdlais in the shot put (47-5).

St. Ignace also picked up one individual win as Troy Sayles won the pole vault (10-6).

The St. Ignace Saints got strong performances from Krista Clement and their mid-range distance relays but it was not quite enough to knock off the Manistique Emeralds in the girls meet. The Emeralds edged the Saints for the top spot 102 to 100.

Clement did her part for the Saints. She won both the 400 meter dash (1:03), and the 800 (2:34), while freshman Carlie Levi won the 1600 (5:53), over 10 seconds better than the second-place finisher.

The Saints also got wins in the 800 relay (1:56), as well as the 1600 relay (4:27.77).

Newberry finished third with 97 points, while Inland Lakes was next with 74. Rudyard was fifth with 69 points, while Engadine and Rogers City placed sixth and seventh with 46 and 34 points, respectively.

For Newberry, Andrea Miller got a pair of wins in the 100 hurdles (17.57), and the 300 hurdles (54.5).

Diana Wertz led the Rudyard Bulldogs with wins in the shot put (31-10), and the discus (106-2).
