Bishop propels Panthers

MT. PLEASANT -- Ashley Bishop proved on Saturday that her dominance in the shot put and the discus is not limited to the Upper Peninsula. Bishop set new meet records in both events to lead the Panthers to a second-place finish in the 17-team field at the Great Lakes Invitational.

Cedarville finished fifth in the meet, and Brimley placed seventh in the field.

Bishop threw the shot 40-4.25, and followed that up with a discus launch of 120-3 to win the event by just over 20 feet.

"It's a big achievement for her to break both those records," said Pickford athletic director Chuck Bennin. "I talked to her earlier in the year and she really wanted to break that 40-foot mark in shot. Now she can concentrate on getting 41."

Brimley and Cedarville each picked up an individual first place-finish as well. For the Bays, Monique McIntyre won the 200-meter dash (27.47), while Cedarville got a first from Tara Amarose in the 100 high hurdles (16.75).

In the boys meet, Anthony Wilson won two events to help the Cedarville Trojans to a seventh-place finish. Pickford finished sixth in the meet, Brimley was eighth, and DeTour placed 14th in the 18-team field.

Wilson took the 400-meter run (53.04), and also won the 800 (2:07.20).

The Pickford Panthers picked up a pair of individual wins as Joe Nyberg won the 300-hurdles (42.21), and Doug Wallis took the high jump (6-1).
