Newberry girls finish 2nd at D-2 regional
NEWBERRY -- Led by triple individual event winner Tara Bjorne, Manistique finished just ahead of Newberry in the girls meet at a Division 2 track and field regional Friday.
Manistique won the girls meet with 45.5, while Newberry was second with 43. Stephenson was third with 37.5, followed by St. Ignace 36, Munising 14 and Rudyard 11.
Ann Labadie led Newberry with wins in the 100 hurdles (17.63) and 300 hurdles (53.41).
Newberry's Cassie Miller finished second behind Labadie in both hurdle events, and also was second in the long jump. Other U.P. qualifiers for the Indians included Rachel Ronquist and Shelly Brown, who placed second and third in the 400. Ronquist was third in the 200, while Amanda Quick placed second in the 800. Kelsey Miller finished third in the high jump and Katie Blankinship was third in long jump. Newberry took second in the 800 relay and 1600 relay.
Krista Clement won the 800 (2:26.07) while Carlie Levi won the 1600 (5:45.35). The Saints also won the 800 relay (1:56.04) and 1600 relay (4:25.79), while taking second in the 400 relay. Erin Evashevski placed third in both hurdle events. Ashley Bosley was fourth in the 400. Also for the Saints, Laura Peterson placed second in the pole vault and fourth in high jump, while Marielle Calcaterra took second in the 200 and Liz Stempki was fourth in the 200.
Dianna Wertz turned in Rudyard's best result with a second-place finish in the discus. Emily Ross placed fourth in the 100. Charlotte Folkersma took third in the 1600. Shayla Postma was third in the 3200, while Folkersma was fourth.
Stephenson prevailed in the boys meet with 45 points. Munising finished second with 38.5, followed by Manistique 32, Newberry 31, Rudyard 22.5 and St. Ignace 18.
Brent Malaski of Rudyard won the 1600 (4:43.24) and 3200 (10:23.26), and finished second in the 800. Also for the Bulldogs, Nathan Templeton took second in the 100 and 200. The Bulldogs also placed second in the 400 relay.
Dan Hiltunen of Newberry won the 400 (53.98) and 200 (24.77). Adam Brown cleared 12-7 to win the pole vault, while Jim Bourdlais won the discus (142-1.10) and took third in the shot put. Also for the Indians, Korey Hanson was third in the 100, Steve Whitman was second in the 300 hurdles and Bill Bourdlais was fourth in discus.
Will Springsteen took fourth in the 1600 and 3200 for St. Ignace. Jeremy Mcginnis was third in the 400, Nick Adams was third in the 800, Nick Roberts placed third in the discus. Troy Sayles was second in the pole vault, while Ed Andrews was third and Aaron Gutchess was fourth.
