Rudyard Opens Cross Country Season

MUNISING -- The Rudyard cross country team got off to an early start on Tuesday, taking part in the Larissa Vaarti Invitational.
The Bulldogs were the only EUP team at the meet. The girls brought home a third-place finish, while the boys finished fourth after a sixth-runner tiebreaker.
In the girls meet, Cheboygan won with 45 and was followed by Stephenson with 54, and the Bulldogs with 82 in the eight-team competition.
Charlotte Folkersma was the top runner for the Rudyard girls. She toured the course in 23:07 for a sixth-place finish. Stephanie Folkersma was eighth, while Mary Couling finished 18th. Erica Nordquest came in 21st. All four girls received medals.
Pika Aderman of Stephenson won the girls race with a time of 21:20.
For the boys, Stephenson won the nine-team meet with 47, followed by Ishpeming 64, Rudyard and North Central 75. Kingsford finished fifth, while Munising was sixth, and Mid Peninsula placed seventh.
Brent Malaski was the top individual finisher in the boys race. He ran the course in 17:52. Justin Hoolsema was also in the top 10 with an eighth-place finish. Jason Gregg was 13th, while Josh Bywater was 20th. Kyle Rice finished 33rd, while R.J. Vandermate was 36th, and Ray Robertson was 37th.
Rudyard coach Alan Jarvie finished second in the JV/Open race in 19:25.
