Blue Devils run to first place at Tiffany Thorpe Invitational

NEWBERRY -- The Sault High cross country teams got off to good starts on Saturday, bringing home both boys and girls' championship trophies from the Tiffany Thorpe Invitational.
The Sault girls scored 28 points to win the meet, while Pickford was next with 56. Newberry was third with 65, Carney-Nadeau was fourth with 82 and Rudyard was fifth with 95.
Kayce Lawrence of the Blue Devils was the individual champion, touring the course in 21:15, a new course record. Jenn Corbiere was third for the Blue Devils (22:50), and Emily Bennette was fifth (23:46). Melissa Kik finished ninth, while Jessica Green was right behind her to finish 10th. Amanda Tadgerson placed 19th, and Nina Ojala was 21st.
In the boys meet, the Sault took the top spot with 31 points, while Pickford was second with 60. Rudyard was third with 71 points, and St. Ignace was fourth with 81. Carney-Nadeau finished fifth with 98.
The Sault's Tony Abramson finished second individually, breaking the finish line in 17:46, while Pete Duesing was fourth (18:47). Craig Cooper finished sixth, while freshman Mike Osterhaut placed seventh. Walter Bennette rounded out the varsity scoring, finishing 12th, while Jacob Blaskowski and Michael Ferraro also medaled with 17th and 20th place finishes, respectively.
For the Rudyard Bulldogs, Charlotte Folkersma placed fourth in the girls varsity meet, running the course in 23:09, and Mary Couling placed 22nd.
For the Rudyard boys, Brent Malaski was the individual winner. He ran the race in 17:42. Jason Gregg (13), and Justin Hoolsema (14) also finished in the top 15.
For Pickford, Rosanna Chapman finished second in the girls meet (21:40), while Courtnie Brown finished seventh. Megan Hunter also recorded a top-10 finish, placing eighth.
For the Pickford boys, Brad Hunter was third (17:56), while Carl Morrison was ninth and Chris Thompson finished 10th.
In the JV meets, the Sault girls took a 20-31 win over Newberry, with Andrea Kokko finishing second in 29:15. The Sault also took the 3-4-5 spots as well as Katie Corbiere, Katy Fortin, and Breanna Eby followed Kokko.
The JV boys won on a sixth man tiebreaker as both the Blue Devils and the Indians finished with 32 points. St. Ignace was next with 87, and Rudyard was fourth with 89. Pickford finished fifth with 94 points.
Woody Merkel was the top Sault finisher. He placed fourth in 22:05. Tyler Gage was fifth, and Ryan Gleason finished sixth. Sean Mulkerns was eighth, Jared Gleason was ninth, and Chris Knauf was 10th. Other top 15 finishers for the Sault included Ian Wilson (13), Gary Herschell (14), and Justin Gingras (15).
The Blue Devils will get another test on Thursday when they compete at the Marquette Invitational in what will be an early preview of the U.P. Finals.
