Malaski eclipses record in SAC meet
ROGERS CITY -- Brent Malaski set a new course record at the Herman Vogler Conservation Area in a Straits Area Conference cross country meet on Tuesday. Malaski toured the course in 17:47, breaking his own mark, to lead the Rudyard harriers to a first place team finish with 40 points.
Newberry finished second with 56, and St. Ignace was third with 61. Rogers City was fourth with 87, and Inland Lakes was fifth with 90 points.
Justin Hoolsema finished fifth for the Bulldogs (19:28), while Josh Bywater was seventh (20:11), and Jason Gregg was eighth (20:29).
For Newberry, John Prieto earned a third place finish (18:52), while Mike Hubbard was also in the top 10 for the Indians, finishing ninth (20:42).
The St. Ignace Saints got top 10 finishes from Luke Fowler who was fourth (19:08), and Tim Mullins, who placed 10th (20:47).
In the girls meet, Rogers City took the top spot with 23 points, while Newberry was second with 51, and Rudyard was third with 74. St. Ignace was fourth with 101 points, and Inland Lakes finished fifth with 122.
Lauren Fairbanks of Rogers City took the top spot, running the course in 20:37. The Hurons took five of the top 10 spots in the meet.
Stephanie Folkersma of Rudyard finished second in the meet (21:51), while Charlotte Folkersma placed sixth (22:20), but it wasn't enough to lift Rudyard past Newberry.
The Indians got a seventh place finish from Kyle Richards (23:17), while Jill Robinson was eighth (24:06). Newberry picked up valuable points as Stephanie Norris, Laura Siuda, Cassie Miller, and Rachel Ronquist finished 11-14.
Erin Evashevski was the top finisher for the St. Ignace Saints. She placed 10th (24:31), and Kaitlan McDonald was 17th.
