Blue Devils run at Jackson
JACKSON -- The Sault High cross country teams made the long trek to Jackson over the weekend to participate in the Jackson Invitational.
The boys team finished fifth in the 12-team field with 130 points, while the girls finished eighth in a field of 13 teams with 216.
Tony Abramson led the Sault boys. He finished seventh overall with a time of 17:24, while Peter Duesing was close behind in 12th place (17:33). Craig Cooper finished 31st for the Blue Devils (18:21), while Walter Bennette was 39th. Mike Osterhout was next for the Sault, finishing 48th, while Mike Ferraro was 55th, and Ryan Gleason was 62nd.
Chelsea won the meet with 60 points.
Kayce Lawrence led the girls with a 12th place finish in 20:34, while Jennifer Corbiere was 25th (21:21). Melissa Kik placed 48th in the meet (23:06), while Jessica Green was 60th. Katy Fortin finished 75th, and Nina Ojala placed 82nd for the Sault.
Battle Creek Lakeview won the girl's meet with 77 points.
For the JV team, Jacob Green led seven Sault runners in the top 80, with over 150 runners participating. Green finished 26th in 19:36.
Erin Gordon led the JV girls, finishing in 46th place in 24:50, setting a career best by over two minutes.
The Sault middle school teams also competed in the meet, with both the boys and the girls performing well.
Russell Smart led six Blue Devils in the top 75 in a field of over 200 runners. His seventh-place finish marks the first top ten placement for a Sault middle school runner. He ran the race in 12:22.
For the middle school girls, Sandra Day was the top Blue Devil finisher, placing 55th in 8:20.
The high school teams will compete on Tuesday in Munising, while the middle school teams will be off until the Big North Championship in Alpena a week from Tuesday.
