Sault boys place fifth, girls sixth at Lancer meet
MIDLAND -- The Sault High cross country teams competed at the Lancer Invitational in Midland Saturday.
The boys continued their improvement by placing fifth in the event, with each Blue Devil improving their times by at least 30 seconds over last week's races.
Mike Osterhout led the Sault, finishing in 10th place with a time of 17:53. Walter Bennette took 12th place in 18:03 overall while Craig Cooper also took a medal, placing 19th in 18:34. Rounding out the Sault's top five were Tyler Gage in 27th (19:10) and Jacob Green in 32nd (19:28).
The Sault boys finished fifth overall with a score of 100. Saginaw Heritage placed first with 62, followed by Midland 63, Bay City Western 85, and Chesaning 97.
The Sault varsity girls placed sixth, but also improved all of their times from last week.
Jen Corbiere finished 19th in 22:56, while Lindsey LaLonde was 20th in 23:02. Jessica Green took 25th in 23:50, Stephanie Day was 35th in 24:43 and Diana Cryderman was 36th in 24:44.
The Sault girls scored 135 points. Bay City Western won with 57, Chesaning was second with 72, Saginaw Heritage was third with 77, Midland was fourth with 78 and Alma was fifth with 94.
In JV action, two Sault boys finished in the top dozen, including Andy Castagne (8th) and Sean Mulkerns (11th).
Katy Fortin led the Sault JV girls with an 11th-place showing while Ashlee Andrew was 12th.
In the middle school race, Brittany Ockenfels finished fifth out of more than 100 middle school girls, running a time of 10:59 over the 1.5-mile course.
The Sault varsity boys and girls teams will compete Saturday in Newberry at the Foxes and Hounds Invitational.
