Pickford boys, St. Ignace girls win track meets
RUDYARD -- The Pickford Panthers boys track team emerged from an eight-team field to win the Rudyard Invitational track meet on Tuesday.
The Panthers finished with 130 points, while the Newberry Indians came in with 116. St. Ignace took third with 112 points, and Brimley finished fourth with 50. Rogers City took fifth with 48 points, and Rudyard was sixth with 39. Engadine placed seventh with 19, and Mackinac Island was eighth with four.
Josh Schwab won two events for Pickford. He took the 110 hurdles (17.08), and the 300 hurdles (44.75). Carl Morrison also earned a win for the Panthers in the 3200 (10:47.20), while the 3200 relay team brought home another first for the Panthers (9:17.43).
Newberry got two wins from Andrew Schultz in the meet. He finished first in the 1600 (4:55.16), and in the 800 (2:11.71). Korey Hanson also earned a win for the Indians in the 100 (12.08), while the 400 meter relay team also finished first for Newberry (48.71).
For St. Ignace, Jeremy McGinnis and Aaron Gutchess were both multiple event winners. McGinnis won the 400 (54.07), and the 200 (24.51), while Gutchess took the pole vault (12-0), and the long jump (18-3.5).
In the girls competition, the St. Ignace Saints won seven events to win the meet.
The Saints scored 151 points, while Pickford had 109. Brimley was third with 71 points, and Newberry was fourth with 59. Engadine was close behind in fifth with 52, while Rudyard was sixth with 36. Rogers City was seventh with 19, and Mackinac Island was eighth with 14.
The Saints won all four relay events, and got individual wins from Carli Levi in the 300 hurdles (53.05), Krista Clement won the 800 (2:41.10), and Katie Spencer in the discus (107-8).
For Pickford, Caitlin Mortinsen won three events including the 100 (14.03), the 200 (29-0), and the 400 (1:05.05). The Panthers also got a win from Jessica Ledy in the pole vault (7-6).
Dana Case picked up a win for Brimley in the 100 hurdles (17.81), while Molly McIntyre won the high jump (4-10), and Emily Gillies finished first in the shot put (32-3).
Charlotte Folkersma earned Rudyard's only two wins of the meet by taking the 1600 (5:41.62), and the 3200 (12:21.86).
The Engadine Eagles got their only win from Amanda Mast in the long jump (13-9).
Sault finishes 2nd at Traverse City
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Sault High girls track team took three first-place finishes at a Big North Conference tri-meet against Traverse City West and Gaylord on Tuesday.
The Sault finished second overall behind the Titans 97-38, while Gaylord finished third with 36.
Erica Green won the 100 for the Sault (13.7), while Emily Browning placed first in the pole vault (9-6). The relay team of Stephanie Day, Green, Emily Bailey, and Sagen May combined to win the 400 relay (55.3).
The boys team had a rough go of it, finishing third in the meet. T.C West finished first with 84 points, while Gaylord was second with 64. The Sault was third with 24.
Marc McDonough won the long jump for the Sault (18-7.5), while Brandon Baril captured the high jump (5-5). The Sault also picked up a win in the 400 relay (45.3).
