Sault girls win freshman/sophomore meet
NEWBERRY -- The Sault High girls freshman and sophomore track team won the Newberry 9/10 meet on Monday afternoon.
The Blue Devils cruised past Newberry 175-94. St. Ignace finished third with 82, while Rudyard was fourth with 67. Munising was fifth with 66.
Erica Green won the 100 for the Blue Devils (13.45), while Dani Fegan took the 1600 (6:09). Julie Mason earned a first-place finish in the shot put (25-8), and Miranda Rousseau won the pole vault (7-0). The Sault also got a win from the 3200 relay team of Kennedy, Sandra Day, Ashley Arbic, and Fegan (10:54).
The Sault also got second-place finishes from the 800 relay team of Sakeena Bartkowski, Arbic, Sandra Day, and Green, as well as the 400 relay team of Kim Pingatore, Green, Mason, and Sandra Day. Kennedy finished second in the 300 hurdles, and Fegan notched a second in the 800. Betsy Deuman placed second for the Sault in the discus.
In the boys meet, Kyle Ward earned Male Athlete of the Meet by winning four events. It wasn't enough though to propel the Sault to the top of the standings.
Munising won the meet with 136, while the Blue Devils finished with 126. St. Ignace was third with 90, while Newberry was fourth with 72. Rudyard was fifth with 64.
Ward won the 100 (11.67), the 200 (24.44), the 400 (55.29), and the long jump (17-9). The Sault also got a first from Shaun Voris in the shot put (39-9).
The Blue Devils got second-place finishes from Tyler Gage in the 800, the 3200 relay team, the 800 relay team, and the 1600 relay team.
