Rudyard Lions issue team challenge for Triathlon

RUDYARD -- The Rudyard Lions Club has announced that the eighth annual Rudyard Lions Summerfest Triathlon will take place on Sunday, July 25 at 9:30 a.m. This event is open to all comers and consists of a 5K (3.1 mile) run, 24K (14.5 mile) bike and a 500 meter (22 lengths) swim in the high school pool.

The triathlon features a reverse format (run-bike-swim) which greatly reduces the chaos of a swim-start triathlon. In the reverse format, athletes will enter the pool at different times, depending on how fast they are able to run and bike, instead of all the participants bumping and jostling in the pool to open the race.

Another interesting aspect of the race is the Lions Challenge. The Rudyard Lions Club has challenged other Lions Clubs, service groups, organizations and neighborhood buddies to get involved in a friendly side competition.

For the challenge, teams must have two or three members competing in relay style. The entry for a challenge team is $75 (which can be paid for by pledges or sponsors). Any challenge teams finishing ahead of the Rudyard Lions team will receive a check for $250 towards its favorite nonprofit charity or group.

Challenge teams are not eligible for general entry team awards and there is no second or third-place award in this group. They are welcome to stay for lunch though, and are eligible for all door prizes.

The event will start in the high school parking lot, off 3rd St. in Rudyard at 9:30 a.m. Onsite registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the high school cafeteria. The fee for the triathlon is $32 after July 15, or $27 before that date. All USA Triathlon rules apply, and helmets must be worn on the bicycles. There will be T-shirts for all participants as well as age-group awards for men's and women's divisions and an award for relay teams in all male, all female, and coed divisions.

Drawings for door prizes will be held during the potluck lunch before the award ceremony, immediately following the race. There is no charge for the lunch and all racers and their families are invited to join.
