Race committee organizers of the first annual St. Joseph Island Triathlon, Duathlon and Kids of Steel events are putting the final details in place to ensure the success of what is expected to be world-class event.

The one-day event will be held on Saturday in Richards Landing.

"Interest seems to be really gaining in this event," said race director Sherri Smith during a recent interview.

"We are looking forward to a great group of competitors from kids and first-time racers to relay teams and experienced athletes."

The event, which will start and finish in Richards Landing, was the brainchild of Smith, a Sault Ste. Marie resident and world champion triathlete herself.

Smith approached the communities of Richards Landing and Hilton beach in the fall of 2003 and winter of 2004 and received their encouragement and support.

"The popularity of this type of event is really growing and will benefit not only to local tourism but the health of our communities," Smith said. "We expect athletes from as young as five-years-old and from as far away as London, England."

The Kids of Steel event will run from about 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the triathlon and duathlon races will run from about 11:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Registration is available online at or by telephoning the race director at 253-5345 and will be accepted up to the morning of the race.

Volunteers are also welcome and can call 253-53445 to sign up.
