Sault athletes used home track advantage to produce some top performances on day one of the NOSSA Track and Field Championships.
Three local student-athletes set NOSSA records and six others produced gold medal results on day one of the meet on Thursday. Competition wraps up late this afternoon and top performers will move on to the All-Ontario Championships next week in Windsor.
Highlighting the local efforts was a NOSSA record by Cassandra McCaig of Korah with a junior girls triple jump result of 10.23 metres. In Senior girls Holly Maskell of White Pines broke her own record shot put with a toss of 10.86 metres. Jordan Verdone from St. MaryÂ’s set a new Junior boys discus toss standard of 45.54 metres.
Gold medalists were Midget division competitors Taylor Corelli and Dominik Graf from Sir James Dunn. Corelli took the girls 3,000 while Graf won the boys 3,000. Teammate Holly Dailey won the Midget girls long jump with a leap of 4.73 metres. The DunnÂ’s James Bergamin won the senior javelin with a best throw of 51.03 metres.
Two Central Algoma Secondary athletes also struck gold. Ryan Kent won the Senior 400 metre hurdles in 59.18 seconds. Brooke Moreau claimed the Junior boys long jump crown by covering 5.72 metres.
