Harvey's hard work pays off as win nets him $100 prize

John Harvey wanted a free pair of shoes all he had to do was win a race. And he did.

Harvey won the 10-kilometre race at the Run the Great Lakes race Sunday downtown.

The long-distance runner finished the race in a time of 36:57.00, ahead of Frank Schnekenburger (38:08.00) and Andrew Skinner (40:08.00).

As a result, Harvey, like all the overall winners received a $100 gift certificate from the Athlete’s Foot.

“I run this race for fun,” said Harvey, a track athlete from St. Mary’s.

Harvey arrived in Sault Ste. Marie Saturday night at 10 pm. after competing in the steeplechase at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field championships in Toronto.

“I don’t mind, I like this just fine,” he said of having to race twice within four days he finished 17th in the steeple chase in Toronto.

In two weeks, Harvey will race the 1,500-metre and 3,000 m at an event in Sudbury as a member of the Sault Athletics Club.

In women’s action Sunday, Ottawa’s Kaireen Patton won the 10-km race in 44:09.00. June Byce was second (44:13.00) and Colleen Cameron was third (47:49.00).
