Bennette, Maleport lead Sault Michigan runners

ISHPEMING - The Sault High boys placed third and the Sault girls took sixth at the Ishpeming Westwood Fox and Hounds Invitational Tuesday.

Jake Bennette turned in the fastest time of the day, with an adjusted clocking of 16:56 in a “chase” racing format. He was followed by Zach Ewing, Ethan Parker and Tyler Goetz. Sam Scott and Keane Cairns were the next Blue Devils to cross the finish line.

Marquette led the 15-team field in the boys event with 29 points, while Houghton was second with 37 and the Sault was third with 88.

The Sault girls were led by Cassie Maleport, who turned in a top 10 finish. She was followed by Meghan Stan, Brenna Moher, Arin Baril, Brittany Ockenfels and Jenna Paquette.

Marquette won the 13-team girls event with 31 points, followed by Houghton 58, and Calumet 73.

In JV races, Ryan Pratt, Cody Ware, Reid Desrochers and Travis MacArthur all had top 15 finishers for the Sault boys. Megan Bunker was overall runner-up for the Sault girls, while Kirsi Heikkinen, Olivia Francis, Amanda Neve, Kyli Burtt, Brianna Slater, Jessica Spincich, Shelby Dale and Faith Lincoln were all in the top 25.
