Four Sault and area athletes posted top-20 finishes Thursday, during an abbreviated Day 1 schedule at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) track and field championships in Sudbury.

Sara Matthews of Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs had the top finish, a 10th-place showing in the junior girls javelin.

Matthews unleashed a toss of 31.55 metres.

Liza Ritchie of White Pines was 13th in senior girls discus with a throw of 27.30 metres.

In junior boys competition, Paul Alexander of Superior Heights jumped 5.48 metres to place 17th in long jump.

In the senior boys high jump, Rob Gallinger of Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS) in Desbarats finished 19th with a leap of 1.92 metres.

Preliminaries were run Thursday in all track events.

The only local runner to qualify for finals was Mitchell Mazzuca of St. Basil.

Competing in junior boys, Mazzuca was the third-best 400-metres qualifier, finishing his prelim in :51.54.

Mazzuca entered the provincials having won the 100m, 200m and 400m events at this year's Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) championships.

A busy schedule is planned for Day 2 Friday, with OFSAA competition slated to conclude on Saturday.
