Sault Stryders
October 1999 Newsletter

The Sault Stryders general membership meeting to be held at the YMCA on Wed., Nov 24 at 7:00 pm. Agenda: Membership renewals, Election of executives and vacancies (President), schedule of races for 2000 and recap of 1999 reason. Membership input welcome.

Another successful running year -1999 road races in area:

Special thanks to Race Director Mike Walz and Committee Members Doug Richardson, Trish Cameron and John Chow for organizing the Great Lakes 1/2 Marathon, 10km & 5km inaugural race in June. It was a huge undertaking and well received. After many meetings and months of planning it went off with a few minor glitches (hey we are novices at this) and was like the race is called: GREAT.

Special thanks to Doug Richardson of the Athletes Foot to take on another road race. Doug resurrected the Fall run and the FALL FIT FEST held in September was a smashing success. Soon after the Great Lakes 1/2 marathon, the above noted committee members went to work and held the FIT FEST in place of the Sault Star Fall Colour Run that the newspaper vacated. I wish to acknowledge that without the efforts of Doug, Trish, Mike & John there would not have been these two great races this year. Also thanks to Dan Schmidt and Dave Saunders who made the official timing and finish line work look so easy and professional.

Kudos to Denis Lefave for the Annual Turkey Trot Run.

Again the St. Joseph Island Corn Feast Run in August was well attended. Special thanks to long time member & Race Director Ray Stortini for putting on a great run and extending his hospitality for runners and families to attend a post race lunch at his home. Thanks to the cooks and helpers; Doug Booth, Richard Wood, Ray Yukich, Mark Menean, Linda and Grady Hess and of course Mary Kay Stortini.

CIBC Run for the Cure is a race that was held recently and is one that our club helped out. Thanks to Raija Gordon and Cheryl Palazzi, two club members who were involved with this well worth cause. Speaking of Raija and Cheryl, congratulations to you both in finishing a 1/2 marathon this year and good luck for your 2000 Marathon goal.

Congratulations to Mark Menean who completed his first marathon in Chicago this year.

BOXING DAY RUN- Watertower Inn, Dec 26 starting at 9:00 am. Brunch to follow. Great fun runs 5&10km. (Grady Hess)
