Detroit Free Press International Marathon

Mario Festival was 21st overall and 14th in the 16-29 age group in a time of 2:35:39. Festival was also the first Canadian to cross the line, leading a field of 88 Canadians. Bob McOmber from Ohio was first in 2:17:37.

From 1963 to 1977 the Motor City Marathon was held on Belle Isle. 1978 was the first year for the Detroit Free Press International Marathon. The race started in Windsor and finished in Detroit on Belle Isle. The race included a one mile run under the Detroit River via the Detroit-Windsor tunnel.
